Google has owned the world’s questions for more than two decades. The habit runs so deep that the company name became the verb. OpenAI wants that habit for itself, and at a dinner it hosted in New York on Monday, November 2, it put a number on the ambition.
Adam Fry, who leads the consumer product work for ChatGPT, said ChatGPT now does about one search for every five searches on Google. He also said weekly users have reached 1.2 billion, up from 1 billion in about two months.
Both figures are OpenAI claims, shared in conversation and published on November 3 by Big Technology, with no data or method behind them. That does not make the claim small. It makes it unaudited. A fifth of Google would be the biggest shift in how the world asks questions in a generation, and the only evidence on offer is the word of the company that benefits from the claim.
The Announcement
Alex Kantrowitz of Big Technology asked Fry what OpenAI had found when it compared ChatGPT search volume with Google. Fry answered in one sentence.
“ChatGPT’s volume of search-like queries is now roughly one-fifth the volume of queries of Google.”
Fry defined a search in plain terms, in reporting by Big Technology and Search Engine Journal.
“Every time you ask a question and go search the web, that’s a search.”
That definition covers questions about a person, a place or a thing where the answer needs current information, and it covers some finance and health questions. It does not cover every prompt. A task that needs no web lookup does not count, and one conversation can count several times if several questions in it send ChatGPT to the web.
It is a generous way to keep score. One person can ask a question three ways, send ChatGPT to the web three times, and watch the search tally grow by three.
The growth claim came with the search claim. Fry said weekly users rose from 1 billion to 1.2 billion in the last two months, which he described as about 100 million new users every 30 days. He added that 250 million people a week now use voice input or voice conversation, and that users create 1.5 billion images a week.
Important Details
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Who said it | Adam Fry, ChatGPT consumer product lead at OpenAI |
| Where and when | An OpenAI hosted dinner in New York on Monday, November 2, 2026, published by Big Technology on November 3 |
| Search claim | Search like queries on ChatGPT at roughly one fifth of Google query volume |
| How a search is counted | Each question that sends ChatGPT to search the web counts as one search |
| Absolute search count | Not given |
| Google figure used | Not named, with no source, period or region disclosed |
| Weekly users | 1.2 billion, up from 1 billion in about two months, by OpenAI count |
| Voice users | 250 million a week, for dictation and spoken conversation combined |
| Images created | 1.5 billion a week |
| Independent check | None published for the one fifth comparison |
One part of the timeline needs care. Fry framed 1.2 billion as a rise reached in the last two months, yet reporting in late September already put ChatGPT at 1.2 billion weekly users. That mismatch does not disprove the current total, but it does mean the growth rate Fry described should be read as a company claim, not as a settled record.
The timing of the wider product story matters too. OpenAI is bringing Chat and Work closer together, the same shift behind the shared allowance for ChatGPT and Codex that starts in December, covered in our report on the December usage change. A claim about search scale lands differently when the company is also asking users to treat chat as the place where work starts.
What Outside Data Shows
Outside estimates use other definitions, and they land lower. That gap is the most useful part of this story, because it shows how much the answer depends on what you count.
ChatGPT search volume as a share of Google volume, by source
Source: OpenAI claim via Big Technology, November 3, 2026; Ahrefs estimate, February 2026; seoClarity modeled estimate, October 2026. Each source uses a different definition, so the bars are not a single measured series.
Ahrefs estimated ChatGPT at about 12 percent of Google search volume in February, using a different method. It started from 2.5 billion daily ChatGPT prompts in July 2025 and treated about 65 percent of them as the kind of query a user would once have taken to Google, then set that total against the more than 5 trillion searches a year Google announced in March 2025.
seoClarity put the figure lower still in October 2026. Its model estimated 1.24 billion search equivalent messages a day on ChatGPT, or about 7.5 percent of a modeled Google total of 16.44 billion queries a day. seoClarity states plainly that its result is a modeled estimate, not a measured market share figure.
Referral traffic tells a sharper story again. In the Ahrefs tracker across 118,671 sites that use its free analytics tool, Google accounted for 24.74 percent of tracked traffic in October and ChatGPT for 0.36 percent, in the update published on November 3. Queries and referrals are not the same thing. A question can be answered inside ChatGPT and send no visit at all, which is good for the person asking and hard for the sites the answer drew on.
Google built an empire by sending people somewhere else. ChatGPT, so far, is the somewhere else.

Google, for its part, gives growth rates rather than counts. In its third quarter release, Alphabet said the search query growth rate was the highest in five years, without publishing a query total. So neither side of the comparison currently rests on a public count that a third party can rerun.
What’s Next
Confirmed steps are few. OpenAI has published no table, no method note and no absolute search count to support the one fifth figure, and no independent firm has checked the comparison. Until one of those arrives, the honest label for 20 percent is a company claim with a broad definition.
Open questions are concrete. What Google total did OpenAI use, over what period, and in which regions? How many of the counted lookups would a user have taken to Google at all, and how many are new questions that chat made easy to ask? And if answers stay inside ChatGPT, what happens to the sites that supply the facts those answers rest on?
Watch the next disclosures from both companies. If OpenAI wants this number treated as more than a dinner claim, it can publish the count and the method. If it does not, the lower outside estimates remain the only ones a reader can actually inspect, and the real shift worth tracking is not the headline ratio but the referral gap, where Google still sends the visits and ChatGPT, so far, mostly keeps them.
